11+ & 13+ Common Entrance

Independent schools select pupils transferring from junior to senior school at the ages of 11+ and 13+ by means of the Common Entrance examination.

Grammar Schools also have selective entry by means of exams. All candidates take Maths, English and Science. At 13+ they may offer any of the following: French, Geography, German, Greek, History, Latin, Religious Studies and Spanish. Students who want to go into Grammar schools will sit a combination of these exams. They will not necessarily sit all of them. The parent should contact the grammar school that they are looking at to find out what exams are required for that school.

The exams for most Grammar schools take place in January (11+) or February/March (13+) of the academic year before the student is to join the school. The candidate must be registered with the school to be eligible to take these exams. This is usually not later than the October prior to the exam. It is strongly recommended that the deadline for registration is confirmed with the school well before this date.

We provide a course, designed to prepare children for entrance exams to either grammar schools or independent schools, both at 11+ and 13+. Our syllabus covers Verbal Reasoning, Non-verbal Reasoning, Maths, English, Science, French, Geography, German, Greek, History, Latin, Religious Studies and Spanish. We also develop each pupil's confidence in his/her own ability, and, wherever possible, we seek parental involvement in support of our students’ development.

Last year we gave Grammar School entry tuition to twenty children. Of these, 17 gained a place at their chosen school.

Classes have an average of 8 - 12 pupils. We believe group tuition is preferable at this young age for a number of reasons. Firstly, it provides a friendly and relaxed atmosphere in which to learn. Second, it allows parents to compare their child against others of a similar ability. Finally, it enables us to provide realistic mock examinations.

We offer  one-to-one tuition where students can be given individual attention. This is conducted from our Gloucester Place premises after school or over the weekend. We can in some circumstances offer a home tuition service to parents.
